Hunger Relief

"If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace, be warmed and filled,' without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."  -James 2 :15-17

Loaves and Fishes

Macalester Plymouth United Church became a member congregation of the Loaves and Fishes organization over 40 years ago. We participate in this dining ministry six times a year on Sunday afternoons.

Volunteers choose grocery items to purchase and donate as per the recipe we use, and other volunteers go to the dining site to prepare and serve the meal. Volunteer time for prep work is 2 pm - 4 pm; Servers work from 4 pm to 5:30 pm. We are currently feeding over 100 up to 250 walk-in diners on each service date. On-site volunteers must be at least 14 years old, with a ratio of one adult to every five youth volunteers. Catholic Charities, Opportunity Center, our assigned dining site, also requires all youth or adult volunteers to complete a volunteer form before reporting to the site. Any member or friend of the congregation is welcome to volunteer.

Forty years later, the need is still there. We value the commitment of those who donate ingredients. Working together on-site helps our neighbors and allows us to connect with each other in service to others.
