Surprising Hospitality

Surprising Hospitality – We’re All Part of It!
A MPUC Hospitality Initiative

Macalester Plymouth United Church has long been known for its hospitality – in fact, we have identified “surprising hospitality” as one of our core values.

For years, a committed group of MPUC volunteers has extended this hospitality to our members and visitors through a variety of hospitality roles. These dedicated volunteers have been our greeters and ushers.  They have hosted fellowship after worship and more.

In looking to our future – with an eye to welcoming back all our members and growing our membership - we want to reboot this hospitality.   We want MPUC to be known as a community where everyone who enters our doors feels our spirit of welcome and hospitality.

Here is where you come in!  Please consider giving your time to support our hospitality a few times a year. Wondering what roles are available? Take a look at the descriptions below.  We’ve listed the activities and time commitments for each role and hope everyone will find something that fits their interest and schedule.

It’s easy to sign up. We encourage you to sign up for dates in 2024 here or stop by the sign-up table in the social hall after worship on the third Sunday of the month.  When you sign up, you’ll receive a more complete description of duties, plus Sign-Up Genius automatically sends timely reminders of upcoming commitments to your email!

Hospitality Team Leader
The Hospitality Team Leader takes the lead on Sunday morning to ensure the ushers, greeters, and fellowship hour hosts are present and oriented to their role.  They also serve as the Head Usher, ensuring everyone can participate in worship.

Sunday Worship Usher
Ushers are hosts for worship.  They are present in the Narthex to welcome people warmly and make sure everyone can participate in worship.  Anyone can serve as an usher. We also welcome those willing to make a bigger commitment by serving on a regular basis, such as once a month.

Sunday Greeter
Sunday greeters warmly welcome people as they arrive at church. They encourage everyone to wear/make a name tag. They also answer visitors’ questions.  Anyone can serve as a greeter. It’s a great opportunity for a whole family to serve and create a welcoming Surprising Hospitality experience. One can also sign up to serve as Fellowship Host on the same Sunday.

Sunday Fellowship Host
Fellowship hosts create an environment of hospitality during the fellowship hour after worship. They are present in the Social Hall, monitoring refreshments and otherwise making sure people have what they need.  Anyone can be a Fellowship host (Note:  This does not involve making coffee, etc.). One can also can sign up to serve as Greeter on the same Sunday.
